A significant contributor to the 2013 model’s appeal are the dimensional adjustments made over the outgoing 2012 Escape. The Big Blue Oval brain trust went back to the drawing board, rethinking the compact crossover SUV by extending its wheelbase by 2.8 inches and increasing overall length by 3.6 inches. Additionally, the width of the machine is 1.3 inches greater. This creates superior leg room for passengers, while the 1.6-inch reduction of height stylishly permits a sloping, sporty roof shape without compromising interior headroom.
Ford is a stickler for the smaller details that add up to a more refined experience, too. Chief among these are the inclusion of 18-inch silver aluminum wheels, which outshine the 17-inch variants standard on the lower SE and S models. The SEL’s seats receive a little TLC, too—leather trim abounds, and both the bottom and back cushions in the front of the cabin are generously warmed during the more uncomfortably brisk fall and winter evenings.
