2017 Ford TransitFord's heading across the pond to launch its multimillion-pound project, which aims to improve the quality of London's air over the next 12 months and beyond. The Blue Oval's initiative will work in tandem with its electrification plans, the latter of which serves to roll out 13 global, electrified vehicles over the next five years. Ultimately, the introduction of the new air project will help expedite the electrification plans.

Kicking off the project, which is supported by Transport for London, is a year-long trial of 20 all-new, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Ford Transit Custom vans. The uniquely designed vans are built to decrease local emissions, operating on electric power independently for most city trips. With a launch set for fall 2017, the project is part of Ford's dedication to collaborate with large cities internationally; the partnerships will all tackle local transportation challenges related to goods and people.

“Ford is the No. 1 commercial vehicle brand in Europe and it’s now going electric. Teaming up with our London partners, we will also be able to trial software and telematics with enormous potential to reduce emissions and costs in the city,” Jim Farley, the chairman and CEO of Ford of Europe, said.

Ford's overarching electrified vehicle plan plays up its strengths; that is, its commercial vehicles, SUVs, trucks and performance vehicles that are the most popular amongst buyers. The new plan will upgrade the high-volume vehicles' capability, fuel efficiency and productivity.
