The trends are ever-changing; the fashions are always fading; and consumers prove both fast and fickle with their favor, with few brands able to secure their attentions. This is the unfortunate truth facing the auto industry… but not the Mustang.
Recently, Top Speed critics left their modern rides behind and slipped into the stylish cabin of the 1969 Mustang Mach 1. This powerful pony - despite boasting decades beneath its hood - stunned with deft handling and exceptional performance, roaring down the track with V8 precision. It proved that newer isn’t always better, defying every automotive trend.
According to Top Speed, the original Mach 1 delivers premium capability. Its 108-inch wheelbase glides down the lane, propelled by burly 7.0L Cobra Jet engine. This V8 yields 335 HP and 440 lb.-ft of torque, courtesy of its four-barrel configuration; and, when mated to a three-setting manual gearbox, it promises nimble responses, utilizing a stiff-spring suspension to accommodate changing roadways. A traction lock rear axle anchors the platform, ensuring balanced support; and the lightweight chassis (3,254 pounds) provides easy bursts of traction.
The 1969 Mustang Mach 1 offers a 0 to 60 run of less than six seconds - making it a viable track contender even by today’s standards. It’s no surprise to the Top Speed team, therefore, that this platform remains a favorite of Ford fans.
