It’s a series of hills - all rising steadily, cresting eventually into a 11,000-foot peak. This is the Ike Gauntlet and it proves devastating to even the most powerful engines.
It couldn’t, however, defeat the 2018 Expedition.
As the TFLTruck team explains, the Expedition was recently pitted against the Ike Gauntlet - one of America’s toughest trails. This eight-mile incline delivers a sharp 7% grade curve, undermining engines and driver confidence alike. Few machines can master it. It proved surprising, therefore, when Ford’s beloved SUV was able to.
The 2018 Expedition dominated the Gauntlet. Boasting a 3.5L EcoBoost engine, this platform revved up every hill with ease - using a two-speed automatic transfer case to seamlessly switch between 4x2 and 4x4 performance-bands. AdvanceTrac technology assessed road conditions, utilizing gyroscopic technology to control torque distribution between the wheels; while a terrain management system delivered custom gear ratios to accommodate changing pavement grades. An available limited slip differential enhanced stability, locking the 3.73 rear axle to create a refined ride; and all-season tires gripped the pavement.
When these features combined, they allowed the Expedition to move deftly down the Gauntlet - requiring only one brake application while towing more than 7,000 pounds. No other SUV achieved such a feat and the TFLTruck team was happy to grant Ford its Gold HitchAward for pure performance excellence.
