2020 seems a lifetime away - but Ford is already planning for its arrival, gearing up for the release of its new Explorer. This SUV will prove a powerhouse on both the Seattle streets and the sales charts, connecting drivers to premium all-terrain capability.

According to CNET, Ford is reinventing its 2020 Explorer - replacing the current front-wheel-drivetrain with a rear alternative. This will enable the platform to more effectively navigate rough terrain, promoting balanced torque distribution between the tires. By eliminating the excess weight generated by its successor's transaxle, it will also ensure speedier responses. Acceleration is expected to increase by (at least) 10%.

The inclusion of a rear-wheel-drivetrain may prove the highlight of the 2020 Explorer - but it’s certainly not the only upgrade Ford is offering. A new 10-speed automatic transmission is anticipated, with its SelectShift design promoting seamless gear ratios; and a 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 is rumored to anchor the chassis, yielding up to 400 HP and 400 lb.-ft of torque. This will brand the platform a best-in-class beast, allowing it to directly compete with the Toyota RAV-4 and the Chevrolet Equinox.

The 2020 Explorer currently has no official release date - but critics believe it will arrive by mid-quarter next year. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for a quick production process.
