Next year's annual event is slated to run its course at the Means Dry Lake in Johnson Valley, CA, which many deem one of the most challenging automotive terrains across the globe. It stretches 165 miles long and is merciless, presenting drivers with aggressive rock crawling sections as well as high-speed desert running. Luckily, Gittin is set to succeed - as a rookie this past February, he came out in 10th place at the Hammers and was the first non-regular of this driving style to achieve that feat. As FoxNews.com also states, "He [Gittin] says the car control he's developed drifting his Ford Mustang RTR paid off on the flat sections, but his result suggests he was clearly a quick study on the boulders, too."

It's time to track your time on the track. Ford Performance recently revealed its all-new data-logging app, which is tailored for drivers who prefer the track to the streets. The app, which was announced to attendees at this year's SEMA, enables users to analyze and share their on-track performance with the push of a button, harnessing the mobility and ease of smartphone technology.
The app is new, but draws upon established technology already utilized by Ford to enhance the driving (and tracking) experience. Ford's most up-to-date version of Sync 3, a common feature in many Ford models, lends its program to display notable track information, such as RPM, g-forces, gear, and speed. From there, the app delivers the information to the driver's phone for later review. Additionally, the app can work with one's smartphone to record video of their track day. As Joel Patel notes for Autoblog.com, "The phone, besides being used as a camera, is also in charge of recording the vehicle's location around the track, which is also displayed on the infotainment screen. Drivers of the Ford Focus RS have something special to anticipate: representatives at Ford Performance recently revealed that a new calibration for the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder is in progress, offering an extra perk for those desiring a burst of additional power. Although the current model's 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder provides 350 horsepower and 350 lb-ft torque across all of its wheels, as well as a 0-60 mph time that clocks in under five seconds, the team at Ford wants to account for drivers who are willing (and eager) to push the boundaries a little further. A look at the Ford Mustang EcoBoost upgrade provides some valuable clues as to what we may expect with the Focus RS' new calibration, since Ford's representatives have been agonizingly quiet about the details. The Mustang EcoBoost's improved power package increases its hp and lb-ft numbers to 335 and 390, respectively; the torque, in particular, ends up only 10 lb-ft shy of the stock Mustang GT's digits. Considering that the Focus RS already boasts more torque and power than the Mustang, we can only wait in suspense to see if the improved calibration will make gains that parallel the GT's.

Adding to its growing collection of awards, Ford's Mustang Shelby GT350R recently scooped up Popular Science's 2016 Best of What's New Award in the auto division.
The competition was stiff in this year's competition - Popular Science's annual presentation of accolades accounts for reviews of thousands of new products and innovations. Only 100 winners across 10 categories walk (or in this case, drive) away with awards in hand, as well as a secured spot in Popular Science's Best of What's New issue. The fundamental criteria? The product or technology in question must represent a notable step forward in its section.
In the case of the Shelby GT350R, its ultralight carbon-fiber wheels sealed the deal. On the GT350R, its front two wheels rely on a ceramic thermal barrier coating for insulation, a technology borrowed from a similar method NASA used on a space shuttle. Compared to equivalently sized, standard aluminum wheels, each 19-inch carbon-fiber wheel weighs approximately 15 pounds less, which improves the GT350R's handling and acceleration. This year's SEMA event in Las Vegas, Nevada features a lineup of 50 customized Ford vehicles. Ford revealed the modified Fusions, F-150s and Mustangs queued up for the event earlier in October, but recently disclosed that a customized Fiesta and five Focus hatchbacks are taking the stage as well. This leaves Ford's crossovers and SUVs as the final vehicles to be announced for the event.
Joining the elite SEMA club is the Fiesta ST, which was built by Tucci Hot Rods. The SEMA-ready Fiesta sports a custom wide-body kit, as well as an updated clutch with a Spec Stage 4 kit. Although the Fiesta's 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine doesn't have any tweaks, the body is lowered and it shows off a custom exhaust system and a Cobb Accessport V3 ECU upgrade. The five Focus models on display are notable more so for their aesthetic upgrades. The customized 2016 Focus ST by Blood & Grease has a dramatic matte paint job, but still shines at the show; the 2016 Focus ST is turning heads with performance upgrades provided by Mountune. While the 2016 Focus RS by H&P Special Springs/Stanceworks sports rally-inspired imagery, the 2016 Focus RS by Full-Race Motorsports has an orange and gray paint job. Rounding out the group is the Focus RS from Roush Performance, which is customized with a new body kit that gives the vehicle an air of malevolence.
