Reality never exceeds expectations - but the 2018 Fiesta ST is the exception to the rule, connecting drivers to turbocharged performance and front-wheel precision. This hot hatch was met to great acclaim in Europe upon its release, leaving the competition crushed beneath its 17-inch wheels; and critics anticipated that its reign would soon spread across the pond, with strong sales predicted for Canada and the USA.
Those predictions were proven false…. because the new ST won’t be crossing the Atlantic at all.
According to Torque Report, Ford is ceasing Fiesta production in North America - citing sluggish sales and miniscule profit margins. Despite this platform’s powerhouse performance overseas (drivers have embraced its 1.6L inline-four engine, delighting in 197 HP and 202 lb.-ft of torque), it’s struggled to find a place among the local market. Perpetually overshadowed by crossovers and sports sedans, the ST has never been able to top the charts.
Bringing the 2018 platform to Seattle, therefore, would be an exercise in folly - with Leo Rocks, Ford’s Performance Director, noting in an interview with Torque Report: “It doesn’t make sense, nor is it possible financially speaking, to import a single trim level, and a niche one at that.” While the Fiesta’s 0 to 60 blitz of seven seconds has made it a favorite in Europe, it doesn’t have the power needed to secure a North American launch.
